This study will focus on the relationships between Maya and Old Order Mennonite Colonies in the Hopelchén region of Mexico. My fieldwork will be framed around two questions: As communities that traditionally hold anti-technological and pacifist commitments, what social, ecological, economic, and religious values influence the willingness of Old Order Mennonites to adopt agro-industrial practices, and GM seeds specifically? What spaces exist in the Hopelchén region that may be hospitable to mutual exchanges of cultural and agricultural knowledge between Maya and Mennonite communities? This will be an exploratory research project that aims to bridge cultural gaps between Maya and Mennonite communities, in hopes of supporting conversations regarding agricultural practices in Hopelchén.
