Abstract:
My project will serve as the study for the third chapter of my dissertation and will explore how extreme indoor heat transforms rates of food insecurity through a social science and environmental justice framework. My study site will be Fort Lauderdale, Florida. My project addresses the following questions: (1) How do the myriad effects of extreme indoor heat pressure food access and food security status? (2) Why does extreme heat drive food insecurity? (3) What are the predictors of experiencing both indoor heat and food insecurity? My study’s hypothesis posits that inequities based on ancestry, citizenship status, sexuality, and gender identity may further compound the vulnerabilities faced by diverse communities in Fort Lauderdale.
