Abstract:

This study aims to access the understory native species regeneration potential of monoculture teak (Tectona grandis) plantations across ages in the transition zone of Ghana (between moist and dry semi-deciduous forest zones), which is a critical knowledge gap in evaluating the effectiveness of this restoration strategy for restoring native second-growth forests. I wish to do so by answering the following questions.

1. Does natural regeneration of native species occur beneath teak plantations, and does the composition and abundance change over time?

2. What percentage and composition of herbaceous cover exist, and how does it change with plantation age?

My objective is to contribute to restoring the ecological diversity of degraded lands.
