The primary objective of this research project is to elucidate the role of vertical niche differentiation in supporting highly biodiverse epiphyte ecosystems in Neotropical montane cloud forest canopies. Observed gradients in abiotic conditions as well as in the distribution of function traits of both epiphytes and their host trees will provide insights into the underlying factors dictating epiphyte survival and therefore epiphyte distribution throughout host tree canopies. A secondary objective of this research is the characterization of the epiphyte diversity in Panama’s Santa Fe National Park. Few studies have been done to capture the biodiversity of epiphytes in the neotropics and existing data is disaggregated. For these reasons, I will add to existing knowledge by creating a guide of the identified epiphytes found in the region.
