Abstract:
My thesis research examines the socio-environmental impacts of Chinese infrastructure investments in Myanmar - focusing on 1) how conflicting discourses of 'development' between Chinese actors and ethnic minority communities in Myanmar, and 2) Chinese corporations' ignorance of the political economy of Myanmar's borderlands, have led to unregulated extraction of natural resources and environmental degradation in one of Asia's least understood tropical landscapes, as well as setbacks in the Chinese state's geo-economic strategy.
