Abstract:

This research project, situated in the biodiverse Jama Coaque Reserve, Ecuador, managed by Third Millennium Alliance, addresses the critical issue of agriculture-driven deforestation and its impact on biodiversity. Focused on agroforestry systems, I will use drone imagery and machine learning to assess tree species diversity, as well as further exploring the socio-geographic factors influencing diversity on agroforestry farms, considering variables such as proximity to roads, elevation, and gender dynamics. This research will inform practical solutions for sustainable land management and foster targeted support for farmers to increase biodiversity.
